notween — privacy policy
effective october 18, 2026
notween is an app where you type a funny idea and it becomes a short animated scene you can post, watch and remix. This policy says what we collect, why, who else sees it, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it. We have tried to write it in plain English.
Who we are
notween is made by Tule Fog Games, LLC, of Davis, California. You can reach us about privacy at support@tulefoggames.com.
The short version
-
You don't give us your name, email, phone number or contacts. The app gives your phone a random key and you a made-up name like
wobbly-otter-42. - We ask your date of birth once, to check you are 18 or over. We keep only the answer (adult or not), never the date.
- What you post is public and stays part of other people's remixes. Your drafts, your friends list and your settings are private.
- We send your prompts and scenes to Anthropic (the company that makes Claude) to make and check them.
- The Android and iOS apps show ads from Google (AdMob). Google's ad software collects your phone's advertising id and what happens with the ads. Where the law requires it, the app asks you first.
- We don't sell your information for money, and we don't give it to data brokers.
What we collect
When you start the app
- A device key. The app gets a random key the first time it opens. We store only a scrambled form (a hash) of it, tied to a random user id. This is how the app knows it is you. There is no password and no account yet.
- Your made-up name. We make it from your user id. You can't change it yet.
- Your age check. We ask for your date of birth once. We keep "adult" or "not an adult", and when we asked. We do not keep the date. If you are under 18, the app stops there.
What you make and do
- Prompts and scenes. Every prompt you type, including ones you change later. Every scene made from them, with its title and a still picture of it.
- Drafts. Your unposted scenes; only you can see them. A draft you never post is deleted 90 days after you last changed it.
- Posts. What you post, who it remixes, and who remixed it.
- Comments, likes, saves and shares. Including the comments you like.
- Follows, friends and blocks. Who you follow; your friend requests, and whether they were accepted or declined; who you block.
- Reports. When you report a post, a comment, a person, or a scene that didn't play, we keep the report and the reason you gave.
- Settings. For example auto-scroll, and your notification choices.
How you use the app
- Watching. For each scene you watch: how long you watched, whether you watched to the end, how many times it replayed, and which scenes were shown to you and where in your feed.
-
App events. The app tells us some things only it can see:
- when it opened and went to the background;
- which screen is showing;
- how quickly a scene started and how smoothly it played;
- when a scene failed to play;
- a rough device class (low, mid or high);
- the app's quality setting;
- on phones that report it, whether the phone is running hot.
With each event come the app version, the platform (Android, iOS or web) and a random session id. These events never contain your prompts, scenes or anything you typed.
To keep notween safe and working
-
Your internet address (IP address). We use it while handling each request, to limit how fast one address can make requests and new accounts.
- For the current day only, we count new accounts per network (an IPv4 address, or the first half of an IPv6 address); older days are deleted.
- When one address makes too many accounts or reads too fast, our server writes a warning. The warning names the address only by a scrambled tag that can't be turned back into it and changes whenever the server restarts. Those messages are kept for 30 days.
- We don't store your address with your events or your posts.
- Your country. Our content network works out which country a request comes from, from its address. We use it only while handling that request, to set how many free scenes a day you get there, and we don't store it.
- Device checks. When the Android app first starts, it may ask Google Play Integrity whether it is the real notween app on a real phone. Today our server does not check or keep the answer.
- Daily limits and spending. How many scenes you made today, and how many extra scenes you got today by watching an ad, so we can apply the daily limit.
Notifications
If you turn notifications on, we keep your phone's notification token and its time zone. The time zone is used for quiet hours and to count "per day". We also record which notifications we sent, which ones we held back and why, and which ones you opened.
Ads
The Android and iOS apps show ads from Google AdMob:
- ads between scenes in your feed, which may fill the screen;
- an ad you can choose to watch for one more scene, once you have used up the day's scenes (see the Terms).
The app checks for Google's consent form, and requests ads, only after the age check. No one under 18 is shown an ad or the consent form.
What Google collects. The ad software in the app is Google's. Through it, Google collects:
- your phone's advertising id and other device identifiers;
- which ads were shown to you and which ones you tapped;
- a rough location worked out from your internet address, to choose ads.
The iOS app doesn't ask for permission to track you (App Tracking Transparency), so Google's ad software can't read your iPhone's advertising id.
Google's own policies apply to what it collects: how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services, and Google's Privacy Policy.
Consent. Where the law requires it, the app shows Google's consent form before it requests any ad. Depending on where you are, the form asks for your consent to ads that use your information, or lets you opt out of them. If you don't agree, Google shows only ads that don't use your information for personalisation, or no ads. You can change your answer later (see Your choices).
What our server keeps about ads.
- When our server places an ad in your feed: a random id for that place, your user id and the time.
- When the app has shown that ad: the time, and Google's estimate of what the ad earned. We don't receive which ad it was, and we don't receive whether you tapped it.
- How many posts you have been served and where the last ad went, so ads are spaced out.
The check for an ad you watch for a scene.
- When you choose to watch one, our server makes a reward record: a random reward id, your user id and the time. The app gives your user id and the reward id to Google's ad software.
- When you have watched the ad, Google's server sends ours a signed message (server-side verification). Our server checks Google's signature and reads three things from it: your user id, the reward id, and Google's transaction id. It ignores the rest of the message.
- It then marks the reward as given, with the time, the day and Google's transaction id, and adds the scene. A reward that isn't confirmed within 10 minutes is marked as expired.
- If a signed message names a reward we don't know or that has expired, our server writes Google's transaction id in its log.
What we don't collect
Your name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, precise location, or your date of birth. Our server never receives your phone's advertising id; Google's ad software in the app does (see Ads).
How we use it
- To run notween: make your scenes, show you scenes, keep your drafts, and show what you posted.
- To choose what you see: your For You feed is ranked from what you and others watched, liked, shared, remixed and followed.
-
To keep it safe:
- to check prompts, scenes and comments against our rules (see Terms);
- to hide content that many people report;
- to limit abuse;
- to spot fake devices.
-
To improve it: we add up the events every night into totals (for example, how many scenes were made, or how smoothly they played on low-end phones).
- We sometimes test two versions of something. Each person is put in one version at random, and we compare the totals.
- The totals don't identify you.
- To show ads: to place ads in your feed and space them out, to add the scene you watched an ad for, and to count the ads shown and what they earned.
- To send notifications you turned on: only about real things that happened to you, at most 3 a day, never in quiet hours.
Who else receives information
-
Other people on notween see:
- what you post, your made-up name and your comments;
- the counts of likes and remixes;
- who you follow and who follows you (like other apps with follows). They see whether they themselves are your friend, but never your friends list or how many friends you have. A post's share link can be opened by anyone, without the app.
- Anthropic (the maker of Claude) receives your prompts, and the scenes and comments to be checked, to make and check them. Anthropic handles it under the commercial terms for our use of its service.
-
Google:
- AdMob, to show ads and to confirm an ad you watched for a scene (see Ads);
- Firebase Cloud Messaging, to deliver notifications;
- Play Integrity, for the device check.
- Amazon Web Services, where our servers and storage run, in the United States. Information of people using notween in India is processed there too.
We don't sell your information for money, and we don't give it to data brokers. Google's ad software collects information in the app as described under Ads; where a state law treats that as selling or sharing, you can opt out in Google's consent form (see Your choices). We would hand over information if the law required it.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Posts, comments, likes, follows, friends, blocks, reports | Until you delete your account. A post you remove is hidden from everyone at once, but kept so the remixes built on it still make sense |
| After you ask to delete your account | Everything you posted is hidden at once. After 30 days everything is erased, except that each post and comment you made stays as an empty placeholder with no content, so the remixes and replies built on it still make sense. Backups age out as above |
| Drafts (unposted scenes) | 90 days after you last changed them, unless you post them. Their still picture goes after 30 days |
| App events (opens, screens, performance) | 90 days, then only the daily totals are kept |
| New accounts per network | The current UTC day only |
| Server warnings that name an address by a scrambled tag | 30 days |
| Ad records: ads placed in your feed, ads shown, and rewards for extra scenes with Google's transaction id | Until you delete your account; then erased with the rest. Backups age out as above |
| Server log lines about a reward we don't know or that has expired | 30 days |
| Backups of the database | 30 days of copies, and daily snapshots kept 35 days |
| Notification token | Until notifications are turned off or the token stops working |
If we ban an account. When we ban an account for breaking our rules and that account is later erased, we keep a small ban record so the same person can't sign up again from that install of the app. It holds the scrambled form (hash) of each device key the account used, a scrambled form of its user id that can only be matched using a key kept on our server, the reason for the ban, and the date. We keep it on the basis of our legitimate interest in keeping notween safe, and it has no set end date. Everything else is erased as described above.
Your choices and rights
- Turn things off in the app: notifications (each kind separately, and quiet hours), and auto-scroll.
- Ad privacy. Where the law requires it, the app's Settings has an "Ad privacy" entry. It opens Google's consent form again, so you can change your answer.
- Your phone's advertising id. On Android, you can reset or delete it in your phone's settings, under Google ads or Privacy > Ads, depending on the phone. On iPhone, the app doesn't ask to track you, and you can stop every app from asking in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
- Skip the ad for a scene. Watching it is up to you.
- Remove a post or a comment you made. It is hidden from everyone at once.
- Block someone. You no longer see each other's posts, profiles or comments anywhere in the app. Neither of you can follow the other or send a friend request, and any friendship between you ends. They are not told.
- Delete your account in the app, in Settings. Everything you posted is hidden at once, and you have 30 days to change your mind by opening the app and cancelling. After that your information is erased as described above.
- Don't have the app any more? Ask for deletion by email, as described at tulefoggames.com/notween/delete, giving your made-up name. Because there is no password, we may ask you to show the account is yours.
- Ask us to see or correct your information, or to stop certain uses. Write to support@tulefoggames.com.
- Depending on the state you live in (for example California), you may have more rights under its law.
- If you are in India, see If you are in India below.
If you are in India
Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you can:
- ask us for a summary of your personal data and how we process it;
- ask us to correct, complete, update or erase it;
- withdraw your consent at any time, as easily as you gave it. In the app, that means: turn notifications off; change your answer in Google's consent form in Settings > Ad privacy, where the app shows it; or delete your account in Settings. Withdrawing doesn't undo what we did before you withdrew;
- nominate another person to use these rights for you if you die or become unable to;
- raise a grievance with us first, and if it isn't resolved, complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Our Grievance Officer: Aneesh Panoli, Grievance Officer, Tule Fog Games, LLC. Email: admin@tulefoggames.com.
Children
notween is for people 18 and over. We ask everyone's age before anything else, and anyone under 18 can go no further. If you believe someone under 18 is using notween, tell us at support@tulefoggames.com and we will remove their information. Our child safety standards are at tulefoggames.com/notween/child-safety.
Where your information is
notween is offered in the United States and India. Our servers are in the United States, and your information is stored there. If you use notween in India, your information is processed in the United States.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will say so in the app before the change takes effect.
